COVID-19 AND ZOONOTIC DISEASES

COVID-19 AND ZOONOTIC DISEASES

Human and animal have always lived together and animals are part of human society as pets and castles. But, this close contact has brought several diseases to humans, such as plague, bird flu, anthrax, Hantavirus and Rabies etc. Zoonotic diseases are very common, around the world. Doctors estimate that around 6 out of every 10 known infectious diseases in human can be spread from animals, and 3 out of every 4 new infectious diseases in human comes from animals. The world is facing one such deadly virus known as CORONA virus.

According to a report of "organisation monidiale de la Sante", it is estimated that globally about 1 billion cases of illness and millions of text that occurs every year due to zoonoses. 70% of over 30 new human pathogens, which have been detected in the last 3 years have originated from animals. At present, 1 such zoonotic COVID-19( coronavirus disease 19) handling class of virus known as SARS-CoV-2( severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) has posed to mankind faced since the Second World War.

In December 2019, new virus emerged in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. As per WHO situation report-130 published on 29th May 2020, globally 5701337 cases along with 357688 deaths. It is rapidly in spreading around the, posing a great threat to the health economy and Society. It has been categorised as a pandemic by WHO. Committee on taxonomy of virus (ICTV) named the virus that as SARS- COV-2.

Other than COVID-19 the human Civilization has faced at least three pandemics in the current century, like H1N1 in 2009, Ebola in 2014, zika in the year 2016.

Covid-19 also has an effect on global climate economic and demography. In the race of development, we all have exploited nature and natural resources. Order to meet the demand of increasing population industrialisation and urbanisation became inevitable. In this process, we have similarly damaged our environment and ecosystem. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 almost every cities and village are under lockdown globally. Non-functioning of industries and factories and limited vehicles on road has resulted in less carbon emission and decreased global warming gases. All these have resulted in healing of the hole in the ozone,  decrease in average global temperature beautiful, lowering of AQI and clean rivers in decades. Overall it has a positive impact on the world environment.

The imposition of complete of partial lockdown has a devastating impact on the world economy. GDPs of the most infected countries has shattered. With business being closed lakhs lost their jobs. People associated with tourism and transport sectors are severely affected. It as it has also affected labours and daily wages earners. We can clearly see its effect on Agriculture as well. With no labour to harvest the crops and limited medium of transport to market as worsen the situation. According to WTO & OECD, the COVID-19 pandemic will be the largest threat to the global economy since the financial emergency of 2008-2009.

One of the changes that occur due to COVID-19 is Reverse Migration of population. This could pose a threat to the economy of cities as there would be fewer people to work in the factories and industries. Due to this pandemic people have started leaving the town and are going back to their villages. The reverse migration will change the demographics. Though this change would have consequences what and how would be decided in the long term. With no employment and source of income, we may witness the rise in the crimes. If migrant labours engage themselves in some economic activity then they can add some value to the economy of their state.

Human races have always remain Victorious. According to Darwin's  Origin of Species, it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives, but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to changing environment in which it finds itself". And we all know that we are the best in all. Humankind must be optimistic that like all the previous disaster, we will win over this and we shall overcome against all the odds.

With no medicines or vacancies out there, we must take precautions and follow the government guidelines. One should refrain from mass gathering and practice social distancing. In the worst scenario, it may also be the case that, there would be no vaccine for this as other Zoonotic such as HIV. As we have learnt to live with such virus, so we may live with this too.
